“Rotten Tomatoes Verified Hot” Badge is Being Awarded Retroactively to over 200 Films with a Verified Audience Score of 90% or Higher, Since the Launch of Rotten Tomatoes’ Verified Audience Ratings and Reviews in May 2019
Rotten Tomatoes Also Makes Updates to the Criteria for Populating Popcornmeter and Tomatometer Scores on the Platform
LOS ANGELES, CA (AUGUST 21, 2024) – Rotten Tomatoes, the world’s most trusted destination for entertainment reviews and recommendations, launched today “Rotten Tomatoes Verified Hot,” a brand-new elevated designation and badge, honoring the best-verified reviewed theatrical films by fans. A complement to the popular “Certified Fresh” Tomatometer badge, awarded to the highest reviewed films by professional critics, Verified Hot is awarded to theatrical films that achieve a Verified Audience Score of 90% or higher on the Popcornmeter, and meet other eligibility requirements. Rotten Tomatoes is celebrating the first movies to receive the Verified Hot designation on the Popcornmeter, including some of the summer’s hottest titles like Deadpool & Wolverine, Twisters, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Fly Me to the Moon, It Ends with Us, and more.
“On Rotten Tomatoes, fans love to consult our verified audience score, in addition to the Tomatometer critics’ score, when discovering new movies and deciding what they want to watch next,” said Amanda Norvell, SVP, Direct-to-Consumer Services at Fandango. “With the addition of Rotten Tomatoes Verified Hot, we are excited to celebrate and shine a spotlight on the theatrical films that fans have unanimously embraced and have taken the time to share their incredible moviegoing experience with other fans.”
In addition to introducing Verified Hot, Rotten Tomatoes has enhanced the branding of its Popcornmeter audience scoring system for all movies and TV shows. Starting today, fans will see a full red popcorn bucket with a “Hot” label, if 60% or more of the audience rates the title with 3.5 stars or higher, while a green tipped-over popcorn bucket will now be labeled “Stale,” when less than 60% of the audience provides a rating of 3.5 stars or higher.

In addition to celebrating the Verified Hot movies of the summer, Rotten Tomatoes is honoring the films that have resonated the most with audiences across the globe since the launch of Verified Audience Ratings and Reviews in May 2019. An audience rating or review is considered “verified” when Rotten Tomatoes can confirm that the person rating the film has purchased a ticket to that film on Fandango. Rotten Tomatoes has published a full list of Verified Hot films on the site, including fan favorites like Top Gun: Maverick and The Color Purple, award darlings such as Parasite and Oppenheimer, and box office smashes liked Dune: Part Two, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Rotten Tomatoes has also updated the criteria for when the Popcornmeter and Tomatometer scores populate on the site for a film, to provide a more accurate reflection of audience and critical sentiment. Both scores will now need to meet a new minimum number of reviews published on the site, for a score to appear. Understanding that the number of reviews a film will generate during its theatrical run can vary greatly, the review threshold will be determined by the film’s total projected domestic box office forecast.
